Treasure

My oldest son sent me a text this week announcing “I won 7 AP awards this year 3 firsts, 1 second and 3 thirds. Hooray for small newspapers.” I am especially amazed and proud of his excellence since he hasn’t been writing for this paper very long. Reporting comes fairly easily to him because he took his training seriously, learned how to add his personal touch and believes in what he does.

I imagine that God looks down on us and gets excited and proud when He sees us excelling too. Even better than that, He is the one who gives out the awards. I see a picture of God looking at us then walking over to our treasure chest and placing more gems inside. The chest is getting full because with our personal touch we have followed our training in righteousness. This training is hard but after a while it becomes natural and we automatically share God’s love with others because of the compassion in our hearts.

Storing up treasures in heaven is easier than gaining treasures on this earth. God’s economy is not down; there are still souls out there to be won to Christ. The value of God’s currency has not dropped with market speculation. The value of eternal life has not decreased but is forever on the upswing. What more could someone want than to live forever in the presence of God who created everything.

I exist in a man-made economy but thrive on God’s economy. My real treasures are not of this world and my earthly income is directly connected to the eternal God. My rewards are in heaven. In a way I find myself caught between two worlds, preparing for heaven but trying to make it in this world. Challenges abound in this life but God has given us a way to make it through. Those who have accepted His Son as Lord and Savior are in covenant with God.

Once we accept membership in the eternal family we can reap the benefits and protection. No one guaranteed this life would be easy. I can attest that it is not. But God promises to protect us with His covenant. He gave us the greatest gift, His Son. Jesus gave us His life to open the door for our covenant with God the Father.

So no matter what you are going through, remember that you can remind God of the covenant He has made with you. Live righteously and you will not be lost. Keep goodness and mercy in mind as you live this life and know God will be with you.
